By Chief Jonathan Riffe
May 27, 2012

Saturday May 27, 2012 at 1151 hours, units from the Huntingtown VFD & Dunkirk VFD were alerted for the serious auto accident with a vehicle on fire on Route 2 in the vicinity of the Park & Ride. As the call was being dispatched, The Fire Chief (Riffe) arrived on location and found a 2 vehicle head-on collision with one vehicle on fire with 3 patients still in the vehicle and unconscious. Chief 6 assisted 5-6 bystanders with removing the 3 males from the burning vehicle. 2 of the patients were not breathing and bystander CPR was begun. The third male was in and out of consciousness. Upon assessment of the 2nd vehicle a female driver was found in and out of consciousness asking for her baby. Chief 6 and another bystander began frantically rummaging through the back seat and found an 8 year girl also in and out of consciousness.

The incident quickly escalated resulting in additional apparatus being dispatched to the scene, bringing over 40 emergency responders to the scene. Ultimately, the fire was quickly knocked down and additional personnel assisted with the 5 priority 1 patients. The two patients that had CPR performed on them were miraculously revived. All 5 patients were flown to 3 different trauma centers via Trooper 2, Trooper 7 and Eagle 1. Units from the Huntingtown VFD remained on the scene 1313 hours.
