Friday July 24, 2009 at 1050 hours, the Dunkirk VFD and Huntingtown VFD were alerted for the overturned vehicle with entrapment and fire at Route 4 and Apple Way (504 box). This assignment brought Chief 6 (Riffe), Chief 6B (Thrasher), Chief 6C (Morris), Safety Officer 6 (McKenny), Squad 6 (Morgan), and Ambulance 68 (Colliflower). Units arrived to find two vehicles involved; an overturned Calvert Sheriff's cruiser with the deputy trapped and the 2nd vehicle fully-involved with the driver trapped. The crew from Squad 5 and BX-5 extinguished the 2nd vehicle on fire. The driver unfortunately perished in the fire. Engine 51 supplied Squad 5. Squad 6 arrived and assisted with stabilizing the cruiser and deployed the 32" Jaws, Maverick Combi-tool, and both "O" cutters. Both driver's side doors and the "B" post were removed to extricate the deputy. Total extrication time took approximately 25 minutes. The deputy was flown to a nearby Trauma Center. Units from the Huntingtown VFD remained on the scene until approximately 1200 hours.
