Yesterday, Saturday, March 21, 2009, two of our members from Huntingtown VFD participated in a state-wide firefighting competition in Millersville, MD. Twin brothers, Ben & Mike Jeffreys have both been members for the past year and are students in the Calvert County High School cadet program. Students in this curriculum leave school early every day their senior year and take the pertinent training they will need in the fire service (FFI, FFII, EMT-B, Rescue-Tech, Haz-Mat Ops, NIMS, Engine Company Ops, Bldg Construction, etc).

In early February, they participated in a regional competition, (Calvert, Charles, St. Mary's) to test their knowledge, skills, and abilities. They finished in 1st & 3rd place and because of this, were invited to attend a state-wide competition yesterday held by "Skills USA." This organization serves students attempting to make a career in their education.

Yesterday, at the state competition, Ben & Mike competed against several other firefighters. They were tested on the time it took don their gear and SCBA, ladder deployment, ropes and knots, and finally an intensive written test. In the end, Mike Jeffreys finished in 2nd place and Ben Jeffreys finished in 3rd place. Congratulations to both of them!!
