With 14 runs in the company journal already, in the early evening hours, Ambulance 69 (Stewart) was transporting a patient to Calvert Memorial Hospital. In addition, Squad 6 (Nasti), was drilling in an acquired structure on Ponds Woods Road. At 1953 hours, Communications dispatched 5462 Stephen Reid Road for "rebar in the leg". Chief 6B (Montgomery), Sergeant 6 (Morris), Squad 6, and Dunkirk "Paramedic" Ambulance 59 were alerted to the call. Units arrived to find a 12 year old male that had fallen onto a 14" section of rebar. The piece of rebar was completely impaled into the lower region of the leg. The crew from Squad 6 stabilized the leg, treated for shock, and utilized the "HURST O Cutters" to cut through the exposed section of rebar. The patient was loaded into the rear of Ambulance 59 for transport to the Landing Zone, established at Fornia Drive. The patient was flown to Children's Hospital. Engine 62 (Capt McKenny) handled the Landing Zone.
