Monday March 3, 2008, with winds gusting around 30 mph, Calvert 911 received a phone call from Prince George's 911 Center. A citizen in PG County reported a large column of smoke directly across the river in the area of Deep Landing Road. At 1447 hours, the Huntingtown Volunteers were alerted for the smoke investigation at the end of Deep Landing Road along the river. Chief 6B (Montgomery) and Engine 61 (Lt Kerns) initially responded.

While en route, Communications advised they received another call reporting a grass fire in the area of 3531 Deep Landing Road. Hearing this information, 2 additional crews in quarters responded with Brush 6 (Montgomery Jr) and Jeep 6 (Gadway, J). The Huntingtown Volunteers arrived to find a fast-moving woods fire approximately 2-3 acres in size running the marsh area threatening to jump the creek. Hearing this initial size-up, Chief 6 (Riffe), Chief 6A (Spriggs), Chief 6C (Hayes), Engine 62 (Grierson, R), and Tanker 6 (Cox, D) now responded. Chief 6B (Montgomery) established command and requested 2 additional Tankers and brush units from Company 2 and Company 5.

Due to quick work, the fire was quickly brought under control. Huntingtown units remained on the fireground until 1830 hours. The fire originated from an unattended pile of burning trash. With all 4 Chiefs and 5 Huntingtown Units on scene, 2 additional crews remained in quarters (as well as a fill-in crew from North Beach VFD). A medical was handled with Ambulance 68 and Squad 6 responded to a motor vehicle accident. Many thanks to the dedicated members for being able to staff 7 pieces of apparatus on this Monday afternoon.
