| 31 minutes before midnight on Tuesday February 12, 2008, the Huntingtown Volunteers, Squad 5 & Ambulance 59 (Dunkirk), and the Medic Unit were alerted for the overturned vehicle at Route 4 and Ponds Wood Road. Less than two minutes later, Chief 6 (Riffe), Chief 6B (Montgomery), Squad 6 (Nasti), Engine 62 (Capt Mckenny), and Ambulance 69 (Morgan) arrived to find two vehicles involved with one vehicle that had rolled several times. Bystanders advised that one vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed, striking a 2nd vehicle, rolling several times, with one driver unaccounted for. The accident started at Route 4 and Ponds Wood Road and ended after the vehicle rolled, several thousand feet north. Due to a bystander advising that the driver had been ejected, an extensive and lengthy search began which started at Ponds Wood Road and ended at Sheckells Road. Two Thermal Imagers were used as well as a K-9 dog from the Sheriff's Department. Unfortunately helicopters were grounded due to weather. After 45 minutes and no luck, the search was called off with the belief the driver fled the scene. One patient (2nd vehicle) was transported by ground to Calvert Memorial by Ambulance 59. Units cleared at 0019 hours. All pictures courtesy of member, Dennis Hook: www.dchookedonphotography.com |
