On Wednesday August 18, 2004 at 1907 hours, Company 6 (Huntingtown) was alerted for the auto accident at 1475 Plum Point Road. While units were in route, Communications advised that they were receiving calls advising that there was a vehicle on fire and a patient had been ejected.

Two minutes later, Chief 6 (O. Osbourn), Chief 6C (C. Spriggs), Squad 6 (Chief 6A, J. Riffe), Engine 62 (Safety Officer C. Cox), Engine 61 (Lieutenant M. Montgomery), Ambulance 68, and Ambulance 69 arrived on the scene. Chief 6C arrived first, established command, and found two vehicles involved. One vehicle was on fire, the other vehicle was significantly damaged with one patient trapped and two patients had been ejected.

The three patients that were in the vehicle that was fully-involved had been extricated minutes before our arrival by bystanders who witnessed the accident. This was fortunate because all three of those patients were in and out of consciousness and would not of been able to have gotten out on their own.

Chief 6C immediately began calling for assistance from other departments while Company 6 units began handling what they could. The crew from Squad 6 and Engine 62 began extricating one patient by removing the roof and three doors while Ambulance 68 and Ambulance 69 began assessing all the patients. Engine 151 (Capt. R. Wells) and the remainder of the crew from Engine 62 extinguished the vehicle fire.

A total of six patients were involved, five of them were priority one patients with severe injuries and one patient was a priority two. The driver that was trapped was rapidly extricated, loaded into Ambulance 69 and transported to CMH with CPR in progress. The other two patients in his vehicle that were ejected were air-transported along with two patients from the other vehicle. Additional ambulances from Company 4 (Prince Frederick RS) and Company 1 (North Beach) assisted in the treatment of patients. Three Medic Units were placed in service in the county and assisted in ALS care along with a private ambulance that was in the area. Engine 61 handled the Landing Zone (Trooper 2, Trooper 7 and Eagle One) at Plum Point Middle School.

That evening, one patient succumbed to injuries followed by a second patient the following morning. Command was terminated at 2035 hours but the Squad remained on the scene for several hours assisting the police in Accident Reconstruction. Many thanks to Ambulance 5 (Dunkirk) and Engine 2 (Prince Frederick) for handling the fill-in at our station."
